Philly Amtrak Derailment

June 9, 2015

Synchronicities—meaningful coincidences, or coincide-ances—can be called for consciously and intentionally, even engineered, or they can occur in response to unconscious beckoning, and sometimes they seem to arrive on the scene at their own initiative and appear subtly and singularly, or in a dazzling cluster on the dark screen of an unsolved mystery like Fourth of July fireworks that flare up in a series having diminishing intensity as they shoot up into night sky. The “firework cluster” synchronicity serves to make a statement and then reinforce that statement in a number of ways over a short period, often a few days—as if someone is saying: “Pay attention to this, grasp the clarity of information arising from the repetitive signal, and accept the consistencies as indicating an important factual message from a reliable source.”

Synchronicities are not acausal as Dr. Carl Jung, who invented the term, considered them based on his interpretation of his own experiences. Synchronicity is a fundamental force originating in the One Cause of Omniverse—a “phenomenon,” when apprehended within the frame of human perception of the ubiquitous synchrony, and it operates throughout Omniverse, randomly (from the ground-level human consciousness perspective) poking its head into and out of the space-time-mind vibrational universe of one’s mortal habitation. The June, 2009 post “Scientification of Panpsychism” supplied a more elementary definition of synchronicity: “momentary personal awareness of the continuous flow of impersonal synchrony as Collective Consciousness expresses itself in unlimited ways throughout the matrix of lower dimensions.”

PluribusOne™ Consulting has used Noetitek™ to devise several Quiktools™ that employ synchronicity in order to generate useful diagnostic information and insights. In the post: “Noetitek Next-Action™” (February, 2009), we announced development of the Noetitek Next-Action™ tool which is a methodological hybrid meta-tool that includes the use of engineered synchronicity. Yet some of our most profound experiences with synchronicity come from out-of-the-blue. The study of one item of interest, such as a Renaissance painting or an ancient artifact, often triggers a profound connection and first-of-its-kind discovery related to an associated matter or a theretofore unrelated artifact. Uninvited signs and symbols often guide us teasingly into entirely new territories. “Unexpected, impressive, and often startling coincidences have been experienced by people over countless ages who related them to the realm of things mystical and magical…”—see “Synchronicity in NoetiTaoism™” (December, 2014).

All of the above is given as preface to our most recent firework-cluster synchronicity, a somewhat counterintuitive breakthrough pertaining to the Philadelphia train derailment that occurred at 9:23 p.m. on May 12, 2015. The cause of the derailment of the Amtrak train (Northeast Regional No. 188) remains under investigation, and federal authorities from the National Transportation Safety Board are inclined to treat it as “accidental”—as opposed to an act of terrorism—despite that a small projectile smashed the locomotive’s windshield just before the crash. No defects, anomalies, or malfunctions (using their words) have been discovered and there is no evidence that the engineer is at fault. Yet the train inexplicably speeded-up to more than double the speed limit (more than 100 mph) rather than slowing down. If all of that is true, we must conclude that the derailment was caused by some outside force as yet unidentified. But like millions of others who read the news reports, we pondered possibilities and moved on.

And then the synchronicities began. The first was so striking and so unmistakably a synchronicity that it was impossible for it to escape recognition: While out shopping not many days following the derailment, I purchased an attractively packaged DVD, a movie released in 2000 but one (of countless) I had not seen before. Starring Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson, the title is Unbreakable. In the very first chapter of the DVD the train on which Willis’ character is riding (No. 177) derails “just outside Philadelphia”—and the train clearly sped up just before the crash. He is the sole survivor and emerges unscathed. It is later revealed that the derailment was the act of a criminally insane man who tampered with something inside the locomotive (speed controls apparently) in a way that the movie does not show. His motive was almost beyond imagining. He was not a garden-variety terrorist, nor was he seeking retribution against the railroad company for some personal offense.

I immediately recognized the obvious shocking parallel to the incident in Philadelphia days earlier—even the eerily similar train numbers 177 versus 188—and I realized that this synchronicity was supplying a unique avenue of investigation. If nothing else, the movie offered a fresh perspective on what the unidentified “outside force” might be—a technologically-savvy lone-gunman-style lunatic driven by some incomprehensible motivation such as wanting to film a train crash like the one in Unbreakable. But the experience seemed too wild to write about. “Sometimes,” in the words of Sigmund Freud, “a cigar (or synchronicity) is just a cigar.”

However, the following day I continued reading a book I had started the day before, titled David and Goliath, by Malcolm Gladwell. I had left off at page 21. As I turned the page to resume reading, halfway down page twenty-two Gladwell begins to discuss how T. E. Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia), representing a kind of “David,” had (on page 23) “sabotaged a train,” one of many as he proceeded to lead “untrained rabble” in his quest to destroy the Turks’ railway system near the end of World War I. This synchronicity was less shocking than the first but seemed to buttress a message that Amtrak No. 188 was maliciously sabotaged, which would match the Turks’ perception of Lawrence’s attacks. Still I was reluctant to share this strangeness.

The day after that, like the further trailing off of the intensity of July 4th fireworks, I experienced a third related synchronicity. Although less informative than the others, it was potent because of its specificity and because it looped back to the first synchronicity and, thereby, delivered a sense of confirmation and completion. In fact, days have passed now and no further synchronicities have happened that can be connected to the derailment. This third synchronicity was delivered through an early episode of the comedy series The Office (American edition), wherein one of the characters makes reference to Unbreakable. I cannot recall another time in all of my extensive film-watching when the title of one film has been mentioned in another. I am sure this is not the only time, but it is definitely a rare event, and this one mentioned Unbreakable right on the heels of the other two synchronicities.

I feel certain that if investigators persevere they will discover that the derailment was not just an accident, that it was an act of sabotage or involved some kind of unconscionable and criminal negligence. The further value of these synchronicities is that it made me think about the fact that 243 people were on the train, of which 8 were killed and more than 200 injured, some critically. Yet, as many as 35 apparently suffered only superficial injuries, and there may have been one or more who were uninjured. In light of the theme of Unbreakable, what might be learned by studying the uninjured?
